With a history of  over 60 years of service to the community of San Antonio, UNAM-San Antonio, a permanent extension school, is the only branch of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in the United States and the only extension of a foreign university in that country.

Like the extension schools in Taxco, Gro.,  Gatineau, Canada, Chicago,   and Los Angeles,  UNAM Campus in San Antonio  operates under the supervision of School for Foreign Students (CEPE) , located in Mexico City.

The goal of UNAM-San Antonio is to promote a better understanding between Mexico and the United States through the teaching of Spanish, English, and other topics important to both countries. The university organizes seminars, symposia, panel discussions, exhibitions, book fairs, and other activities involving the United States and Mexico. In conjunction with American universities, UNAM-San Antonio conducts diverse academic activities orchestrated by UNAM, the most important institution of higher education in Mexico. Through its parent institution, the School for Foreign Students, UNAM-San Antonio serves as a link between UNAM and higher education institutions in the United States.

With the implementation of videoconferencing, which links the UNAM in Mexico City with its branch in San Antonio, the possibilities of culture diffusion and academic collaboration with other institutions in the United States have broadened.
